Honestly, Toyota should have just stuck with the 2jz design and ramped up production, then released the new supra with it boosted from stock and with a 6spd manual.
It would have been so much more popular than the BMW drive-train and cost them $0 in R&D.
It's not that the BMW drive train is bad or anything, it's just not what supra enthusiasts want.
It's a classic case of "if it's not broke, don't fix it".
